Saint Cesarius of Arles : "Jesus passed through towns and villages teaching"

Book of Isaiah 66,18-21.

I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory. I will set a sign among them; from them I will send fugitives to the nations: to Tarshish, Put and Lud, Mosoch, Tubal and Javan, to the distant coastlands that have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory; and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations. They shall bring all your brethren from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots, in carts, upon mules and dromedaries, to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their offering to the house of the LORD in clean vessels. Some of these I will take as priests and Levites, says the LORD.

Letter to the Hebrews 12,5-7.11-13.

You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons: "My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges." Endure your trials as "discipline"; God treats you as sons. For what "son" is there whom his father does not discipline? At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 13,22-30.

He passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them, Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where you are from.' And you will say, 'We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.' Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where (you) are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!' And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."

Sermons 7; CCL 103, 37f

"Jesus passed through towns and villages teaching"

Pay attention, dear brothers: the holy Scriptures were passed on to us so to speak as letters come from our homeland. Our homeland, indeed, is paradise; our forebears are the patriarchs, the prophets, the apostles and the martyrs; our fellow countrymen, the angels; our king, Christ. When Adam sinned, we were thrown so to speak into the exile of this world. But because our king is faithful and merciful more than we imagine or express it, he deigned to send us, through the patriarchs and the prophets, the holy Scriptures, as the letters of invitation by which he invites us to our eternal and first homeland … Because of his unspeakable kindness, he has invited us to reign with him.

In these conditions, what idea do they have of themselves, these servants who do not deign to read the letters which invite us to the happiness of the Kingdom? … «If anyone does not acknowledge this, he is not acknowledged» (1Co 14:38). Certainly, the one who neglects to look for God in this world by reading the sacred texts, God in his turn will refuse to admit him to eternal happiness. He should fear that he may find the doors locked, leaving him outside with the foolish virgins (Mt 25:10) and that he might hear: « I don't know who you are ; I do not know you ; depart from me, all you evildoers »… Those who want to be favorably listened to by God must begin by listening to God. How could we have the effrontery to want God to listen to us favorably, if we attach so little importance to him that we neglect to read his precepts?

Saint Isaac the Syrian : "Whoever humbles himself shall be exalted."

Book of Ruth 2,1-3.8-11.4,13-17.

Naomi had a prominent kinsman named Boaz, of the clan of her husband Elimelech. Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, "Let me go and glean ears of grain in the field of anyone who will allow me that favor." Naomi said to her, "Go, my daughter," and she went. The field she entered to glean after the harvesters happened to be the section belonging to Boaz of the clan of Elimelech. Boaz said to Ruth, "Listen, my daughter! Do not go to glean in anyone else's field; you are not to leave here. Stay here with my women servants. Watch to see which field is to be harvested, and follow them; I have commanded the young men to do you no harm. When you are thirsty, you may go and drink from the vessels the young men have filled." Casting herself prostrate upon the ground, she said to him, "Why should I, a foreigner, be favored with your notice?" Boaz answered her: "I have had a complete account of what you have done for your mother-in-law after your husband's death; you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know previously. Boaz took Ruth. When they came together as man and wife, the LORD enabled her to conceive and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed is the LORD who has not failed to provide you today with an heir! May he become famous in Israel! He will be your comfort and the support of your old age, for his mother is the daughter-in-law who loves you. She is worth more to you than seven sons!" Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and became his nurse. And the neighbor women gave him his name, at the news that a grandson had been born to Naomi. They called him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 23,1-12.

Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens (hard to carry) and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.' As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Spiritual discourse 58, 1st Series

"Whoever humbles himself shall be exalted."

There is a humility that comes from the fear of God, and there is a humility that comes from God himself. There are persons who are humble because they fear God, and there are persons who are humble because they know joy. The first, those who are humble because they fear God, receive sweetnes in their body, a balance of the senses and a heart that is broken at all times. The others, those who are humble because they know joy, receive a great simplicity and a big heart that nothing holds back any longer.

Jacob of Sarug : "Come to the feast"

Book of Judges 11,29-39.

The spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and through Mizpah-Gilead as well, and from there he went on to the Ammonites. Jephthah made a vow to the LORD. "If you deliver the Ammonites into my power," he said, "whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites shall belong to the LORD. I shall offer him up as a holocaust." Jephthah then went on to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his power, so that he inflicted a severe defeat on them, from Aroer to the approach of Minnith (twenty cities in all) and as far as Abel-keramin. Thus were the Ammonites brought into subjection by the Israelites. When Jephthah returned to his house in Mizpah, it was his daughter who came forth, playing the tambourines and dancing. She was an only child: he had neither son nor daughter besides her. When he saw her, he rent his garments and said, "Alas, daughter, you have struck me down and brought calamity upon me. For I have made a vow to the LORD and I cannot retract." "Father," she replied, "you have made a vow to the LORD. Do with me as you have vowed, because the LORD has wrought vengeance for you on your enemies the Ammonites." Then she said to her father, "Let me have this favor. Spare me for two months, that I may go off down the mountains to mourn my virginity with my companions." "Go," he replied, and sent her away for two months. So she departed with her companions and mourned her virginity on the mountains. At the end of the two months she returned to her father, who did to her as he had vowed. She had not been intimate with man. It then became a custom in Israel

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 22,1-14.

Jesus again in reply spoke to them in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those invited: "Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast."' Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.' The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.' Many are invited, but few are chosen."

Commentary of the day :

Jacob of Sarug (around 449 – 521), Monk and Syrian bishop
Homily on the veil of Moses

"Come to the feast"

Women are not so closely united to their husbands as the Church is to the Son of God. What husband other than our Lord ever died for his wife, and what wife ever chose as husband someone crucified? Who has ever given his blood as a present to his wife, otherthan the one who died on the cross and sealed his bridal union by his wounds? Who have we ever seen dead, lying at the banquet of his wedding, with, beside him, his wife who embraces him to be consoled? At what other feast, at what other banquet, has anyone ever distributed to the guests, under the form of bread, the body of the husband?

Death separates wives from their husbands, but here it unites the Spouse to her Beloved. He died on the cross, gave his body for his glorious Spouse, and now, at his table, day after day, she receives him for food … She is nourished by him under the form of the bread which she eats and under the form of the wine which she drinks, so that the world may recognize that they are not anymore two, but only one.

Saint John Chrysostom : "You too go along to my vineyard."

Book of Judges 9,6-15.

Then all the citizens of Shechem and all Beth-millo came together and proceeded to make Abimelech king by the terebinth at the memorial pillar in Shechem. When this was reported to him, Jotham went to the top of Mount Gerizim, and standing there, cried out to them in a loud voice: "Hear me, citizens of Shechem, that God may then hear you! Once the trees went to anoint a king over themselves. So they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.' But the olive tree answered them, 'Must I give up my rich oil, whereby men and gods are honored, and go to wave over the trees?' Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'Come; you reign over us!' But the fig tree answered them, 'Must I give up my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?' Then the trees said to the vine, 'Come you, and reign over us.' But the vine answered them, 'Must I give up my wine that cheers gods and men, and go to wave over the trees?' Then all the trees said to the buckthorn, 'Come; you reign over us!' But the buckthorn replied to the trees, 'If you wish to anoint me king over you in good faith, come and take refuge in my shadow. Otherwise, let fire come from the buckthorn and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 20,1-16.

The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.' So they went off. (And) he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o'clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.' When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' When those who had started about five o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.' He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? (Or) am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?' Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Commentary of the day :

Saint John Chrysostom (around 345-407), Bishop of Antioch, then of Constantinople, Doctor of the Church
Homilies on Saint Matthew, no. 64

"You too go along to my vineyard."

It is obvious that this parable is addressed both to people who have been virtuous since their youth and to people who become so only in their old age: to the former, to preserve them from pride and to stop them from reproaching the people of the eleventh hour; and to the latter, to teach them that they can deserve the same salary in a short time. The Savior had just spoken about giving up wealth, about scorn for all goods, about virtues, which require a big heart and courage. For that, the zeal and energy of a youthful soul are necessary. So the Lord rekindles in them the flame of charity, strengthens their sentiments, and shows them that even those who came last receive the whole day's salary.

All of Jesus' parables - those about the virgins, the fishing net, the thorns, the barren tree – invite us to show our virtue in our actions. He speaks little about dogmas because they don't require much effort. But he often speaks about life. Or rather, he talks about it all the time because, since life is a constant combat, the effort is also constant.

Saint Peter Damian : To give up everything and follow Christ

Book of Judges 6,11-24.

Then the angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. While his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press to save it from the Midianites, the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, "The LORD is with you, O champion!" "My Lord," Gideon said to him, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are his wondrous deeds of which our fathers told us when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' For now the LORD has abandoned us and has delivered us into the power of Midian." The LORD turned to him and said, "Go with the strength you have and save Israel from the power of Midian. It is I who send you." But he answered him, "Please, my lord, how can I save Israel? My family is the meanest in Manasseh, and I am the most insignificant in my father's house." "I shall be with you," the LORD said to him, "and you will cut down Midian to the last man." He answered him, "If I find favor with you, give me a sign that you are speaking with me. Do not depart from here, I pray you, until I come back to you and bring out my offering and set it before you." He answered, "I will await your return." So Gideon went off and prepared a kid and an ephah of flour in the form of unleavened cakes. Putting the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, he brought them out to him under the terebinth and presented them. The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and unleavened cakes and lay them on this rock; then pour out the broth." When he had done so, the angel of the LORD stretched out the tip of the staff he held, and touched the meat and unleavened cakes. Thereupon a fire came up from the rock which consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and the angel of the LORD disappeared from sight. Gideon, now aware that it had been the angel of the LORD, said, "Alas, Lord GOD, that I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!" The LORD answered him, "Be calm, do not fear. You shall not die." So Gideon built there an altar to the LORD and called it Yahweh-shalom. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 19,23-30.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible." Then Peter said to him in reply, "We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

Commentary of the day :

Saint Peter Damian (1007-1072), hermit then bishop, doctor of the Church
Sermon 9, PL 144, 549-553

To give up everything and follow Christ

It is a great thing, in truth, to "give up everything", but greater "to follow Christ", for, as we learn in books, many people gave up everything but did not follow Christ. Following Christ is our task, our work, in that consists the main part of man's salvation, but we cannot follow Christ if we do not leave behind everything which hinders us. Because "like an athlete he joyfully runs his course" (Ps 19:6) and no one can follow him laden down with a burden.

Peter said, "We have given up everything", not only worldly goods, but also the desires of our heart. For those who remain attached, even just to their own life, have not given up everything. Moreover, it's no good leaving everything behind except one's self, for there is no burden heavier than our ego. What tyrant is crueler, what master more pitiless for man than his own will? ... Consequently, we must give up our possessions and our own will, if we want to follow him who had "nowhere to rest his head" (Lk 9:58) and who came "not to do his own will but the will of the one who sent him" (Jn 6:38).

When you believe in God, but not church

view source
Believing in God is never complete without belonging to a church. Church in this context should be understood as group of believer whose members care for each other. This could be a catholic church or any other church.

God Himself is a Community of Persons. To believe in God is to share in the life of God and this can only be realized when a believer belongs to a community who shares his belief. In other words, when we begin to understand God, we are moved towards building relationship and in doing so we tend to build a church.

This is similar to the concept that God is Love. Love cannot exist in one person alone. Love always presupposes 2 or more persons a community. Hence to believe in God but not church is just like believing in love but not loving anyone.

It should be noted however that there is a great difference between the Community of Three Divine Persons and the Church community. The former is bound by perfect Love while the latter is by not-perfect' love. Many of those who believe in God but not the church are people who expect to find a Perfect Love in a pilgrim church (hence not yet perfect church) which is hardly possible.

Explaining the existence of God with the absence of physical evidence

view source
God is a being outside the realm of space and time; hence it is pointless to prove God's existence by means of any physical evidence. Furthermore physical evidence is only a tool for proving something but the conviction whether it has indeed proven something lies on the individual Testimony of Consciousness.

Physical Evidence is Not Enough

As an illustration, take for example some tricks done by highly skilled magicians. As far as physical evidence is concern, they could prove that they can do something, which is contrary to some law of nature, for example defying gravity by making someone float in the air. However, no matter how convincing the physical evidences are, still there is something deep within you, which says, "I don't believe it." This something deep within us is the testimony of our consciousness. In similar manner, despite we do not have any physical evidence of God's existence; there is always this something deep within us that says God exists. We could not prove it physically but we are quite certain, we can feel it, based on our collective life experience that God exist.

Testimony of Our Consciousness

Co-incidences. We have lots of experiences in life where things just turned out good unexpectedly, just on the right time and place and when everything seemed to be lost. They are not really co-incidences, they are proof there is God.

I am healed. People experience miraculous healing, either in big or small scale. This unexplainable cure when experienced together with feeling of inner peace and joy is an experience of God.

My conscience. In every decision that you make specially when there are some elements of malicious intent involve, you can hear from deep within telling you not to do it. It is popularly known as conscience but actually it is God.

There is no God. When a person is adamantly denying the existence of God and he just could not help not to do so - it is because the testimony of his consciousness is telling him otherwise. Why is he so paranoid in proving that God does not exist rather than proving than proving that there is no life in other planets or anything worth proving? Why the existence of God. It is because he can feel it and he is still in the denial stage. Time will come when he would concede.

Latest Press Release from British Gas

Here are some basic facts: CO2 is one of the greenhouse gasses in the planet; we need green-house gasses to keep our planet warm and habitable; CO2 emission was found to be progressively increasing over the years.

The Problem: There are some evidences of drastic climate change – typhoons and hurricanes are becoming relatively stronger, big blocks of ice-berg had been melting, etc.

Analysis: While we need CO2 and other green-house gasses to keep our planet habitable, it is always true that anything that is too much is bad. So far among the green-house gasses only CO2 had significantly changed in terms of air concentration hence it is very likely that there is a link between climate change and CO2. While this needs to be proven scientifically nonetheless by applying simple common sense anyone can conclude that too much amount of green-house gasses than what the earth requires will simply make it warmer.

Solution: Reduce CO2 emission. Collectively we can make a difference. We need to start now.

green energy

BRITISH GAS LAUNCHES GREENEST ENERGY TARIFF 9 August 2007:

British Gas has announced it is launching two new green energy tariffs, Zero Carbon, which will be the greenest tariff available on the domestic market and Future Energy. British Gas has launched the tariffs, in response to the increasing demand for green energy products.

Householders signing up to the Zero Carbon tariff will:
• reduce their household energy carbon emissions to zero through Kyoto compliant offset schemes which will meet the new Defra requirements
• help fund a direct increase in investment in renewable energy generated in the UK
• contribute to the new British Gas green fund which will:
o invest in developing new renewable technologies such as wave power
o oversee a programme to help schools in the UK reduce their CO2 emissions.

Gearóid Lane, Managing Director British Gas New Energy said,”Our new tariff responds to consumer demand for truly green energy solutions. It is essential that customers have confidence in green energy tariffs and that their credibility is not damaged by tariffs that claim to be green but in reality do not deliver any incremental environmental benefits. Green tariffs are moving from niche to mainstream products and we’re leading the industry by offering a tariff that will do more for the environment than any other product currently available.”

Under the government’s Renewables Obligation (RO), electricity suppliers in the UK are already required to produce an increasing percentage of their electricity through methods such as wind farms which, unlike traditional power plants, produce zero carbon emissions. For 2007/2008 this figure is set at 7.9%.

In a recent report, the National Consumer Council (NCC) raised concerns that some energy suppliers are packaging electricity which is produced under the RO scheme as “green”, yet it delivers no additional environmental benefits. The NCC called on energy suppliers to take steps beyond their legal requirements and offer green energy tariffs that provide genuine additional environmental benefits, in particular CO2 emissions reduction.

British Gas worked with Global Action Plan and The Climate Group’s “We’re in this Together” campaign to develop Zero Carbon which goes further than any other green tariff in meeting these requirements offering consumers the only zero carbon option on the market.

The tariff carries a premium of £84 per year, reflecting the higher cost of producing energy through lower carbon emission schemes.

Virginia Graham, Chair of Global Action Plan, said, “The British Gas Zero Carbon tariff delivers on all three of the essential requirements of a green tariff which are: additionality, transparency and verifiability. As such it is a very welcome new offering in the market. Consumers signing up to the tariff can be confident that they are getting 12 per cent more renewable energy than they would otherwise have got. The carbon emissions from their electricity and gas will also be offset with emissions reductions from projects accredited by the United Nations.”

Zero Carbon is one of the first initiatives launched through the ‘We’re in this Together’ campaign, which was launched in April 07 as an alliance of some of the UK’s biggest brands who are all working to help their customers reduce their impact on the climate.

Dr Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group and founder of ‘We’re in this Together’ said, “We’re committed to offering people ways to make a real impact on climate change through Together.com. We’ve worked with British Gas to ensure that Zero Carbon is a genuine step forward in delivering more environmental benefits than any other tariff currently available.”

British Gas’s second green energy tariff, Future Energy, offers an alternative green electricity tariff at a premium of just £20 per year. Customers signing up to this tariff will contribute to a green fund which will provide solar panels and other renewable energy technologies to UK schools. Money from the fund will also be invested in development of future renewable technologies and sources.

To sign up customers can call British Gas on 0845 604 0055 or visit http://www.blogger.com/www.britishgas.co.uk

Do prayers work?

view source
There are four types of prayer, namely adoration, contrition, thanks giving and supplication.

When we speak of prayer, generally we mean prayer of supplication. Does prayer work when we pray for something? Definitely yes but maybe not in the way you think it does.

When we pray for something we think as if God's answers prayers in the same manner when we answer someone who asks for a favor from us. As if in a sense we are trying to convince God or to make God acts on our behalf i.e God is like playing to be someone who wanted to be given importance who would only give our needs if we ask for it. Or God is a God who does not know our needs hence we need to remind him if what are they? No, God is simply none of those.

Even before we pray God knows our needs and He is very much willing to answer them.

The main difference between a person who pray and one who does not is that the former in the course of his praying finds the answer while the latter misses God's answer to his needs. In other words when we pray (for something) we tend to become more aware of God's way of communicating to us hence we find the answer. On the other hand if you don't pray you will never hear God's way of talking to you and consequently you miss his answers to your needs.

Is Freedom Truly Free?

Every human act has different degrees of freedom. Some are freer than the others. A human act is only truly free when its object is the real good.

Every act comes from the activities of human will and intellect. The will' always wills the good. However the will judgment of the goodness of a thing depends upon the intellect. In other words if the intellect provides erroneous data i.e. telling the will that such and such is good where in fact it isn't, then the will wills it as good.

Let's take the act of smoking as an example. Before a person wills to smoke, his intellect will undergo a series of investigation whether it is good or bad. His criteria in judging the goodness of a thing or an act depends on his collective knowledge and conscience formation. After such deliberation it would pass its judgment to the intellect. Whatever the intellect findings the will takes it at its face value. If the intellects passed on the message to the will that it is good, then the will wills it and the person will smoke.

Hence an act is only truly free when a subjective good agrees with an objective good. In other words if the intellect discerns that a certain act is good and it is indeed good then it is true freedom. On the other hand if the intellect judges an objectively evil as good, then his action is still free i.e. directed towards good but it is of lesser degree of freedom because an objective evil was perceived as good subjectively.

Why Abolish Death Penalty

view source
1. It is an insult to God. God created men in his image and likeness.

A person no matter how evil he became due to collective factors viz. upbringing, parental (mis)guidance, environment, innate personality etc. still has the capacity to change for the better because God creations - wherein man is one of them are good, in fact man is the best among them. When a person is condemned to die because of a crime committed, it is just like telling God, "You created craps."

2. Money matters. Poor are always in the disadvantage.

The first person meted with death penalty in the Philippines was a poor fish vendor who had been exonerated after spending three years in the death row. Had he been rich, such would never happen to him.

3. It is murder.

It is intentional and premeditated killing of a person; therefore it is murder, a violation of the fifth commandment.

4. It is punishing the wrong party.

The people who suffered more are the relatives of the condemned criminal and members of the society who opposed it. There was one case wherein the victims of the crime committed (rape) were daughters of the accused. Few days before the execution, the daughters begged the then President Estrada to pardon their father but Estrada did not listen to them. A double black-eye to the children.

5. It is a reward rather than punishment.

No one knew what happened to the soul of the murdered' criminal. But most likely he would go directly to heaven. Why? {a} Inmates in the death row are being taken cared of spiritually by someone with spiritual authority, e.g. priest. By the time that his time comes, he could have repented already and therefore he would definitely go to heaven. (b) God is merciful and forgiving, He would certainly forgive a victim of an unjust killing i.e. death penalty.
Maybe it would be a good practice if the judge, congressmen, senators and the president who approved death penalty would take turn in acting as phlebotomists.

Moral Issue of Abortion

The question whether abortion is morally good or bad presupposes a second question that would answer the first. This second question is, when does human life begin?' If it can be proven that human life begins at some point after conception then abortion could be justified as morally good (assuming that the intention in doing so is for the good of the mother). On the other hand if it could be proven that human life begins right after conception, then abortion is tantamount to murder, therefore it is morally evil.

My personal stance on this issue is that human life begins right away after conception.
Our life is best understood in terms of relationship, e.g. I am my mother's son, I am so and so friends etc. The deeper our connectedness or bonding with a person, the stronger our relationship is.

Now imagine a person closely related to you had passed away, how would you feel? For sure you would find it very painful as if something that is part of yourself has been taken away. But in contrast if someone totally unknown to you dies you would be significantly less affected. In fact some of us would not even be affected even a little bit.

The point being is that both persons who died in the above examples were human being. In other words, whether you are closely related to a person or not, he is always a human being and therefore his life should be preserved at all cost.

Another thing I would like to mention about (persons) relationship is that every relation has different degree. My relationship with my wife is much stronger than with an ordinary friend. And the strength of every relation could either get stronger or weaken.
Now with regards to the relationship between the mother and the unborn person, we could say that it is equal to zero at the beginning (though with a potential to become very strong in the future). This is so because there is not yet a significant relationship or bonding between the two persons.

A mother who wanted to abort her unborn child feels just like anyone's feeling when he or she heard about an unknown person death. The mother sense of loss would be much lesser than when losing a baby who died after being born. A child whom she had already cuddled, talked to and loved.

However with regards to killing a baby either one who is already born and one that is not yet born, there is no difference at all. Thus if general moral standard consider killing (intentionally) as murder, then the same thing applies to abortion.

Duplex Scanner

How do you tell whether a product will perform well in the market?

Here’s how:

Quality – the most important feature of your product or service. No one likes to pay for craps.

Affordability – price-wise your product must be able to compete with what are currently available in the market. Buyers would settle for a “less good” product when the price differential is significantly big.

Necessity – nice product, very affordable, but does anybody need it? No? Then forget about it.

Convenience – Too heavy? Too big? Too complicated? Too bulky? Too messy? The magic word now-a-days in the market world is “user-friendly”. It’s the X-factor.

Range of Application – The more, the better, the fast-seller and stays longer in the market.

Extras, Extras, Extras – some things that go with your products at no extra-cost. Sometimes this makes the difference. I know it looks odd but some people buy products because of the extra rather than being interested in the product itself.

. . . and what about a portable duplex scanner for your scanning solution . . .

Believe me, it got everything. . .

Emphasizing Mary's Purity

Is Virgin Mary indeed virgin? One of the qualities of Virgin Mary that stands out most is her virginity.

In today's (canonical) standard, if she was/is indeed physically virgin then her marriage to St Joseph can be dissolved on the ground of unconsummated marriage.

Were those brothers of Jesus mentioned in the Bible his real brothers or as currently taught were they only his cousins? Assuming that they were indeed Jesus brothers by consanguinity, then what is wrong with it. Isn't it that one of the purposes of marriage is to have children? Is sex between married couples wrong? If not, then being virgin while married at the same time is not really a virtue.

Whether Virgin Mary was indeed a virgin only she and God know. The problem with giving to much emphasis on Mary's virginity is that very few of the women of today can actually relate with her or make her as a role model. Furthermore sometime it misleads others by having a notion that sex is evil. Some would even link original sin to sexual intercourse.

I believe that Mary's PURITY should be given more importance rather than her virginity. Even if she had other children our Salvation would not be affected.

Is there heaven and hell, or just heaven for everyone?

Hell is mentioned several in times in the Bible and Christian Churches recognised its existence. In other words there are those who would go to hell and those to heaven. Nonetheless, both groups are loved by God. Those who would go to heaven deserve heaven and those going to hell are better off in hell than in heaven. Or simply if you end up in hell it is because relative to your circumstance hell is better than heaven.

The point being is that, hell is not eternal damnation as commonly believed. God is love and His love is UNCONDITIONAL. All His actions are motivated by this unconditional love, hence when God decides that a soul should go to hell it is because God loves him so much.

The pre-Vatican view of hell as eternal damnation into everlasting fire is the more common understanding of it. This kind of concept of hell made a very backward kind of Christian. A person who has such kind of belief would say to himself: 'I will do good because I don't want to rot in hell; I will attend mass because I don't want to go to hell; I will honour my parents because if I don't God will punish me into everlasting fire in hell'. Notice that the motivation is always fear of hell and the intention is purely personal salvation. Indeed a very shallow kind of faith.

A mature Christian would say, I will do good because it is for the benefit of everyone, I will attend mass because I love to listen to the Word of God and I want to congregate with my fellow Christians, I will honour my parents because I love them and I want to let them feel how I appreciate the love they lavished to me specially when I was a baby. Note that the person motivation is purely love, hell does not even comes across his mind.

Following are two analogies that would prove that souls in hell are not being punished but rather loved.

1. Imagine yourself as very dirty, i.e. your smell is very bad and your appearance is that who haven't bathed for so long. Then you find yourself in the company of very clean people. Do you think you would be comfortable in their company? Of course you wouldn't. You would rather be in the company of others who smell and look like you.

2. Heaven is just like learning how to read. A person who devoted much time in learning how to read and having learned so would be very happy when someone would give him some very nice books as gifts. On the other hand a person who did not bother learning how to read would never appreciate gifts in form of books. In similar manner a very sinful person would never appreciate heaven.
